Re: Councilman Thomas “Esposito” McCarthy Will Seek Re-Election?
Dear Councilman McCarthy:
Newsday reports that you will seek re-election
to the Smithtown Council. Among the
things you should be ready to explain are the following:
In 1999 you
publicly praised former Councilman Michael Hollander saying, “he’s the real
Republican.” A few years later,
Hollander pled guilty to Grand Larceny.
In 2004 you
obtained a bogus opinion from Supervisor Patrick Vecchio’s Ethics Board saying
that it was just fine for you to vote on a condemnation project on Southern
Boulevard even though your partner Frank Esposito would benefit thereby.
In 2005 you lamented the re-election
loss of your running mate, Edmund “Blue Chip Ed” Lynch who was Smithtown’s
Highway Superintendent. As reported to
you personally in writing, Lynch took in $186,000 in campaign contributions and
spent $176,000 on a personal lifestyle worthy of a prince. On Election night you told the press that
Lynch lost because of all baseless newspapers stories. Earlier, after Lynch had been exposed as a
thief in Newsday and the local papers you appeared with Lynch on the
steps of Town Hall endorsing him for re-election. In June 2007 Lynch pled guilty to Grand Larceny and Offering a
False for Filing.
At the end of
2006, you, Vecchio and Council Members Edward Wehrheim and Patricia
Biancaniello allowed the town’s Chief Building Inspector, Robert Bonerba, to
slip out the back door of the Building Department with a pension knowing that
the District Attorney had issued a subpoena for Bonerba’s Financial Disclosure
Statements the previous September 18th. On those statements Bonerba pleaded the Fifth Amendment. What are you and your cohorts going to say
if someone – let’s say Bonerba for a hypothetical – pleads guilty to felonies
and, as part of his deal, fesses up to all his dealings with you and the rest
in open court, particularly that pension
caper? Been there, done it many
times, Tom.
For more than 10
years you were liaison to the Building Department. You practically moved your bed into the Planning Department. A look at “Friends of Tom McCarthy” shows
the megabucks that you have obtained from builders and developers that do not
even come from Smithtown. When you were
not in the Planning and Building Departments throwing your big mouth and your
weight around you were over at 59 Landing Avenue --- the business office of
your partner, Frank Esposito who last year pled guilty to bribing Bonerba.
Some election
cycles are ho-hum. Some are more fun
than a barrel full of political pantloads.
And speaking of pantloads, what does the current Smithtown Republican
Chairman have to justify your designation?
McCarthy, you have a lot of explaining to do.
Yours truly,
Lawrence
N. Gray, Esq.
